Age Care
If you or a loved one has a disability, you may be eligible for assistance through the NDIS. This FAQ page provides answers to common questions about eligibility, application processes, and available options under the National Disability Insurance Scheme.
What is the NDIS?
The NDIS, also known as the National Disability Insurance Scheme, offers funding support to individuals with disabilities in Australia. The NDIA (National Disability Insurance Agency) oversees the NDIS, and you can find more information on their website.
How does the NDIS work?
The Australian Government introduced the NDIS to ensure that people with disabilities have access to care and support, regardless of their location. This national scheme provides funding for care services and related costs directly to individuals. This empowers individuals and their caregivers to have greater control over their care and lifestyle choices.
Who is eligible for NDIS support?
All Australian residents and citizens aged 7 to 65, living in Australia, and experiencing a disability caused by a permanent impairment are potentially eligible for NDIS support. Different schemes may cover those outside this age range. You can learn more about eligibility criteria for NDIS support on their website here.
How to apply for NDIS support?
To apply for NDIS support, you can either call 1800 800 110 or complete an online Access Request Form and submit it to the NDIS. If you need assistance with the application process, you can reach out to your local area coordinator, early childhood partner, or NDIA office.
Is the NDIS means tested?
No, the NDIS is not means tested, and it does not affect other types of support such as the carers allowance or disability support pension.
What does the NDIS cover?

The NDIS covers various types of support, including

  • Transportation for community and social activities
  • Workplace assistance
  • Daily personal activities
  • Therapeutic supports
  • Home help and home modifications,
  • Mobility equipment, and vehicle modifications.

It does not cover services already provided by other support or health programs unrelated to your disability. Additional details can be found on the NDIS website.

How to get an NDIS plan?
Once you receive an access decision letter approving your access to the NDIS, the next step is to create your plan. Each plan is unique and tailored to your specific needs, goals, and required support. The NDIS will arrange a planning meeting to discuss these aspects and help you develop your plan. The NDIS website provides valuable information to help you prepare for your planning meeting and make the most of it.
What is NDIS plan management?

NDIS plan management is an optional service where a provider assists you in managing your NDIS funding. These providers, called plan managers, differ from the NDIA, which manages the funding in your NDIS plan, or choosing to self-manage your plan. Plan managers can help

  • Enhance your financial and plan management skills
  • Support self-management
  • Manage payments to providers
  • Offer budget oversight
  • Provide access to NDIS budget reports

If you wish to use a plan manager, you can request this during your planning meeting or contact 1800 800 110 to make changes to your existing plan.

How to apply for NDIS for my child?

For children under 7 experiencing developmental delay, you can learn about the early childhood approach and funding options here.

Does the NDIS cover dental?
No, dental services are not covered by the NDIS. These services are typically covered by other government health programs and are not considered directly related to disabilities.
How is the NDIS funded?
The NDIS is funded by both the Commonwealth and state and territory governments, with the Commonwealth contributing slightly over half of the total funding. The funding arrangements are reviewed every five years.
How much does the NDIS pay?
The NDIS provides funding to support participants in purchasing reasonable and necessary supports that promote independence and social and economic participation. The amount of funding you receive depends on your individual participant budget, and you can choose which provider/s deliver your services. While service providers may have varying prices, the funding amount from the NDIS is fixed and outlined in the NDIS price guide.
Is ADHD covered by the NDIS?
ADHD is not directly covered by the NDIS. However, if there is another disability present that can be considered a primary disability, a person with ADHD may be eligible for support related to that primary disability.
What can I buy with NDIS consumables?

The NDIS funds the cost of specific consumables necessary to manage disability-related needs. “Reasonable and necessary” consumables up to the value of $1,500 are covered. You can decide how to allocate your consumables budget, but you must keep track of your expenses. Examples of consumables include
